What You Will Need:

  • 1 head of garlic
  • Bread (any kind you would like but thick soft bread works the best)
  • Olive oil
  • Salted butter
  • Parmesan cheese
  • Special ingredients (This is where it can be fun; choose 2 from the following) Honey, Jam (any flavor), Pesto, Extra Butter, Olive Paste, Truffle Oil, Chili Peppers, Pickles, Spicy Mustard

Directions:

Step 1: Pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees.  Then slice off the top of the garlic head so you can see the cloves. Wrap it in foil or put it in an oven safe dish. Bake for 25 minutes or until garlic cloves are really soft. One way to tell if they are done is to put a knife into one of the cloves and if it slides in easily, then it is done. Also your house should be smelling like fresh garlic.

Step 2: While the garlic is baking, slice the bread into bite size pieces. You want to be able to finish each piece in about two bites. Anything bigger or smaller and it just becomes too messy to eat.

Step 3: Lightly drizzle olive oil, covering the bottom of the cooking sheet and place the pieces of bread on top. Then lightly drizzle or brush more olive oil on top of the bread. The goal is to have a nice, light coating of olive oil.

Step 4: Next, squeeze into a bowl the garlic gloves from the garlic head. Mash the cloves into a paste and then spread it on each piece of bread.  Finally, coat each bread piece with melted butter.

Step 5: Once you complete the above tasks, then separate the bread into two groups, spreading each group with one of  your 2 special ingredients . Then place both groups in the oven until the bread becomes nice and toasty.

Step 6: The last step is to add the Parmesan cheese. Take the bread out of the oven; be careful, it will be hot. Add the shredded Parmesan cheese,  placing a little mound in the center of the bread before putting them back into the oven. It will only take about 2 minutes or less for the cheese to melt, so check periodically or you will have crispy critter snacks instead of delectable morsels of cheesy, buttery, garlicky goodness.
