New Student Orientation – A Perilous Journey?

New Student Orientation introduces you to your new campus’ ways of life, so to speak, both academically and socially. At the end of a new student orientation experience, most students are, simply put…information overloaded to the max.

New Student Orientation

Just think, you’re learning about new campus rules and regulations.  Getting to know all about your requirements, options, choices, and opportunities. In essence, transitioning to a new, exciting chapter in your life.

Keep in mind that at the same time, you’re learning a new campus culture, making new friends, adjusting to roommate living situations, and, probably balancing a new sense of freedom.New Student Orientation session

Although New Student Orientation appears to be a good-time “campus family” event, it is really your very first test at developing your networking skills in pursuit of your academic and career goals.

Although there are fun and games, there are also opportunities to begin the process of building your own success team.  So play when its time to play, but listen carefully when campus personnel speak.

Determine who you would like to engage as a member of your college and career success team.

Meet your academic adviser, not just during orientation, but often during the school year.  Have regular conversations with them about your college/career plans and goals.  They know a tremendous amount about how to survive and be successful on their particular campus.

New Student Orientation Questions

As for the actual perils of new student orientation, don’t get caught up in just the social camaraderie of campus life. Always be on the lookout for opportunities to build your career networking contact base.  In the long run, that can result in rewarding lifelong connections.

You can make some very formidable career contacts during your college years if you’re pro-active in seeking them out.

So enjoy New Student Orientation.  However, keep a sharp eye out for networking opportunities that will help you achieve your college and career goals.
