Deciding whether or not to go to college is a major life decision for many high school seniors. While some are ready to go directly to college, others are unsure. If you fall into the unsure category, then you may want to consider taking a “gap year”.Winning!

A gap year is a period of time you take after graduation to figure out who you are, what really interests you, where you want to go, and how you need to get there. If college is in your life plan, then consider going through the college application process first, see who accepts you, and then weigh your options, once you graduate.  In most cases, you can always defer your college acceptance for a year.

There are actually gap year programs available to help you sift through your life options.  Such programs like Americorp, Habitat for Humanity, and World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms offer you the opportunity to live in new and interesting places, meet new people from across the country and around the globe, and gain invaluable life experience.

So, if you’re still unsure about going directly into college right out of high school, then consider taking a gap year.  Make the experience worthwhile.  Talk to your high school counselors about gap year programs.  Research your options. In doing so, you can always enhance your interpersonal as well as your networking skills.  Having “real world” experience has a tendency of creating better students, better opportunities!
